Just been in Tesco and saw a chap buying beer, He was fortunate enough 
to look under 25 (though he was clearly over 18), so they "had" to check 
his ID - he proffered a passport.

So far so - ell, okay - but then the assistant typed his passport number 
into the terminal. With a clubcard, that's a record of name, address and 
passport number. Even without a clubcard, the name can be traced.

Why do Tesco need that record? What can it be used for by Tesco, or by
the Police? How long do Tesco keep it?
